Chris Calle: Banded Linsang (Tiger Civet)
A cat-like mammal of dense, tropical rainforests, the Banded Linsang, classified Prionodon linsang, is the rarest member of the civet family. It is sometimes referred to as the Tiger-civet. Other linsang species include the African linsang of western and central Africa, and the spotted linsang that inhabits the tropical uplands in northern India and Myanmar, and southern China and Nepal. The Banded Linsang occurs from the south of Thailand, where it is rare, through Malaysia to Indonesia. Known for its soft, velvety coat, the Banded Linsang is gray to brownish-gray in color, with spots on its back that merge together in five irregular bands. The tail has seven complete black and white rings. This species has retractile claws, a long slender body, narrow head, elongated muzzle and dense, thick fur. A nocturnal hunter, the Banded Linsang is omnivorous and feeds on birds, tree rats, snakes, small mammals and insects, as well as fruit. This species is secretive and elusive, and spends most of its time in trees, easily maneuvering between branches and using its long tail for balance. It builds a sleeping nest of sticks and leaves that it uses for a few days only. Young are born in holes in trees or in openings between tree roots. Female offspring remain with the mother until maturity, but male young leave soon after weaning. The Banded Linsang has slender, short legs and when hunting, it slithers along the path of its prey in a snake-like manner.
