In a rare moment of rest, Florida's River Otter sits underneath the shade of the state tree, the Sabal Palmetto. Normally, frisky River Otters chirp, chuckle, scream and squeal, expressing their delight with their activities as they frolic on the riverbank. Otters spend much of their time playing. When winter chills turn river mud into ice, delighted Otters hurl themselves down the icy bank and merrily slide across this frozen playground. In the warm summer sun Otters also spend much of their time playing. They slide down muddy riverbanks, then immediately cleanse themselves in the cool river. Sinuous and aquatic, River Otters clown like small children on a summer holiday. When they aren't wrestling or romping around, they play follow-the-leader in the water, occasionally popping to the surface to rub noses with their playmates. Special muscles for closing ears and nostrils against water and elastic webbing between their toes all help River Otters enjoy their relaxed lifestyle in the water. But Otters' special agility and strength shows best during their daily fishing expeditions. Using their streamlined bodies to drive their prey forward, Otters outswim most fish. When the flailing fish are caught, Otters capture them in their strong, steel-trap jaws.
