No other bird has captured the imagination of mankind as completely as the hummingbird. More than 300 species of these little flying jewels have been identified; North America is fortunate enough to claim 16. In the spring, the annual rites of passage begin and the hummingbirds zip northward out of Mexico into the United States. Some will lay over at various locations for several weeks, while others will push on, driven by instincts that are eons old. Flower nectar, tiny insects and sugar water from feeders provide the energy to push onward. Bird-watchers are enraptured by the little birds, with their bright coloration, extraordinary flying antics and minute size. These three factors make the hummingbird the most unique bird in the world .
