Don Balke: Painted Bunting No one could get the male Painted Bunting wrong. It is called the most gaudily colored North American songbird. The male has a blue head, green back, and red rump and underparts. The female is not so vivid, but is still pretty straightforward to identify. Green above, pale yellow-green below. It dwells in roadside thickets, hedgerows, gardens, field edges, and open scrubby country. Nesting season is from mid-May to late July, in well-hidden nests, usually less than six feet above the ground.
