Fenton's Wood White is a woodland species in the Pieridae family. A white butterfly with obscure markings, its range is vast, extending from eastern Europe across temperate Asia to Siberia, Mongolia, north China, Korea and Japan. Flying in two generations from April through August, Fenton's Wood White can be found in humid meadows, on the fringes of forests, and within mountain forests, flying up to altitudes 6,000 feet above sea level. Dull, drab white and yellow are the predominant colors of the Pieridae family and this small, white, woodland sprite is no exception, although the first generation is usually greyer than the second. Typically, the observer will see it flying slowly and close to the ground and feeding on Lathyrus verna, a species of the pea family. Acting by instinct and seemingly oblivious to danger, butterfles like Fenton's Wood White are Nature's free spirits, their seemingly undirected flight personifying a carefree attitude.
