Gordon Beningfield: Red Admiral Butterfly One of the world's most people-friendly butterflies, the Red Admiral readily approaches humans, even daring to perch on them. This intriguing behavior allows an up-close-and-personal view of this beautiful butterfly when one is lucky enough to be the featured attraction. Black and scarlet markings are distinctive, and white patches on the black parts of the forewings create a stunning contrast, making this species easy to identify in the field. The hindwings are bordered by a wide scarlet margin with a row of black dots. Its range is extensive and includes North America, Europe, northern Africa and Asia. An inhabitant of marshes, woodlands, meadows, gardens and parks, the Red Admiral migrates during the winter to warmer climates. The caterpillar feeds on willows, poplars and elms, as well as nettles, hops and pellitory plants. A swift and erratic flyer, the mature Red Admiral flies from flower to flower, nectaring on red clover, aster and butterfly bush.
