Gordon Beningfield: Clouded Yellow Butterfly Widely distributed throughout Europe, North America and the temperate regions of Asia, Clouded Yellow butterflies (genus Colias) are highly migratory and known for their fast flight and orange, white or yellow color patterns. Two common European species include the Pale Clouded Yellow Butterfly (Colias hyale) and the Clouded Yellow Butterfly (Colias crocea). Although both are often seen in Great Britain, they are not resident species. These butterflies migrate northward in May and June from temperate Mediterranean regions. Berger's Clouded Yellow (Colia australis) is occasionally found in Great Britain as well, and is almost indistinguishable from the Pale Clouded Yellow. Although female Clouded Yellows are typically yellow, there exists a white variety known as helice. Clouded Yellow butterflies feed on leguminous plants like peas, clovers and vetches.
