Gordon Beningfield: Eastern Orange Tip Butterflies are not only the most beautiful of all insects, but they are among the most useful too. For butterflies help spread pollen from flower to flower as they feed, thus assuring the development of the flower species. Butterflies are found throughout the world and in every type of climate. Some live on cold mountaintops or near Arctic regions while others thrive in the hot forests near the equator. Scientists estimate that there are over ninety thousand different kinds of butterflies and moths which makes them the second largest order in the animal kingdom, next to beetles. No one knows exactly why butterflies are called butterflies, but it has been speculated that it is because so many of the beautiful insects have the bright yellow colorings of butter. Scientists classify butterflies in the order Lepidoptera which comes from two Greek words meaning "scale wing." This is because the wings of the butterfly are made up of rows of tiny scales which will come off easily if rubbed. While butterfly wings are very delicate, it is still possible to repair torn wings with materials such as scotch tape. The colorful Eastern Orange Tip butterfly depicted on this artwork is a male, for the female of the species is almost entirely white. However, in extremely rare cases, a male Orange Tip will be found with one side of his wings covered with the brilliant orange markings while the other side has the dull white markings of the female.
