Gordon Beningfield: Marbled White Butterfly The Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) is the commonest member of the Satyridae family of butterflies in Europe. But is an exception to the sober coloration of the family, displaying a bold checkered pattern of black and creamy white on the upper side of its wings and a delicte network of lines and eyespots on the underside. The Marbled White is found throughout Europe and western Asia where, from late June through August, it thrives in flower-rich grassland fields. The female sprays her eggs on tall grasses. Upon hatching, the caterpillar hibernates until early spring when it feeds upon its home, preparing for metamorphosis and its final, brief, but frenetic life in the sunshine.
