Gordon Beningfield: Dusky Grizzled Skipper If you should walk through the magnificent Alpine mountain regions in the tiny European principality of Liechtenstein during the summer months, it is possible you would see the distinctive Dusky Grizzled Skipper butterfly. The family of butterflies called Skippers are so named because of their sudden, erratic and very fast flight. Skippers have extremely good vision and are difficult to catch once they have been startled. At first glance, it is hard to tell whether the Skippers are butterflies or moths, because they have thick, hairy bodies and a wide head. These are characteristics usually identified with moths. However, a closer examination will reveal that Skippers, like most other butterflies, fly during the daylight and have small clublike appendages at the end of their antennae. The presence of these antennae definitely classifies them as butterflies. The Dusky Grizzled Skipper butterfly has greyish colored wings with a white checkered pattern around the outer edges. In addition, the forewing features spots that are somewhat square in shape.
