One of the largest butterfly groups, Blues have several hundred species. These delicate butterflies are identified by their small size and are usually blue in color, although some species are white or coppery. The Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon) is seen in early spring to fall. The female is brown or blue, with a broad orange band with black spots on the hindwings. The Orange-bordered Blue (Plebejus melissa) -- also known as Melissa Blue -- produces two broods per year and feeds on leguminous plants. The Sonora Blue's (Philotes sonorensis) primary food plants are stonecrop and other succulents. The caterpillar of the Marine Blue ( Leptotes marina) feeds on the buds and blossoms of wisteria, alfalfa and locoweed. This butterfly appears later in spring than other blues. The beautiful Pontic Blue (Agrodiaetus coelestinus) is commonly found in Europe and is seen in early spring to fall.
