The wonderous story of Christ's birth actually originates months before the Holy Christmas night in Bethlehem. It begins in Nazareth with a young woman trusting God and accepting His will for her life. When the angel Gabriel brought the news to Mary that she had been chosen by God to be the mother of Christ, Mary although troubled by the message -- did not hesitate in her response. "Behold the handmaid of the Lord," she said: "be it unto me according to thy word." Then, almost immediately the angel departed, leaving Mary to sort out his words and understand the great and glorious responsibility that was hers. It was then that the hard reality of the situation came home to Mary. In the times in which she lived, to be an unwed mother was a terrible disgrace. She no doubt thought of Joseph, her beloved fiancé and of her family -- and how she would make them understand her annunciation. But, when the time came to tell each person, God gave her the right words ... and prepared each heart to understand Mary's story. Certainly, this in itself, is part of the Christmas miracle. Then, when the months had passed and Mary gave birth to Jesus in the Bethlehem stable, the Christmas miracle was complete and the full glory of heaven shone down on mankind. From the annunciation through the birth, God's love had surrounded Mary. Her humble acceptance of His plan for her life has become an inspiration for both women and men throughout history.
