For centuries, men lived as their forefathers had lived in the small villages of the English countryside. Undisturbed in the placid peace of the country, peasant folk kept their legends and myths alive by passing them from generation to generation. In this way, old customs were preserved and the peasants kept faith in the folklore of their ancestors. In these villages, which seemed isolated from change, life was dependent upon the land and what could be raised on it. For this reason, the festivals and holidays celebrated by the country peoplemany times looked to nature -- and often to the changing of the seasons -- for their origins. The Lammastide festival accompanied the harvest, and in a real sense, it was the peasants way of thanking the Harvest Spirit for giving them another year of good crops. The Morris Dance celebrated spring with pageants and dancing. Valentine's Day honored the beginning of the birds' mating season, which promised the coming of warm weather to the country folk. In deep winter, the Mummers procession with its bright costumes and merriment foretold the coming of spring. Several of these festivals and many others born in country villages are still alive today in various parts of the world. Thus, the heritage of this country folklore is a treasure close to the hearts of the English and to people everywhere.
