Fritz Wegner: The Magi Sent by King Herod, the Wise Men journeyed to Bethlehem in search of Christ. Herod ordered the search because he had heard Christ referred to as King of the Jews, and he mistakenly thought the Babe was a threat to his power. So, although he had told the Magi "Go and serach diligently for the young child ... (so) that I may come and worship him also," in truth he wished only to slay the Babe. Following the magnificent star of Bethlehem, the Magi found the Babe in a manger. Immediately, the men worshiped him and presented gifts of gold, frankincense and Myrrh. Later, the men were warned in a dream not to return to Herod with their glad tidings ... for he planned to harm the Child. These great kings in all their finery are mentioned just once in the Bible and little is known of them. The Bible does not say what their names were ... or even how many there were (although three gifts are mentioned.) Yet, in the years since the first Christmas, the wise men have taken on personalities and stories all their own. Today, each has been given a name and a life history. in many areas of the world, the Magi are honored with a special holiday -- Three Kings Day. The appeal of these noble kings is almost magical. To them alone the bright star of Bethlehem appeared and divine intervention guided them home. Truly, through embellishment over the years, the wise men have been transformed from casual participants in the Christmas story ... to heroic personalities admired around the world.
