Fritz Wegner: The Nativity And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. (Luke 2:15-19). Jesus was born during the closing years of Herod the Great's reign. For Jerusalem, the center of the Jewish world, it was a troubled period. Herod, was a Roman, and the Jews resented this foreign dominance. Hatred between the Roman rulers and the Jewish subjects smoldered, and during this period of discontent, many Jews clung to the ancient prophecy telling of a Savior that would restore Israel's glory. For many of them, this was their only hope. On that first Christmas, their faith was finally rewarded. The shepherds quickly spread the news that the Christ Child was born. They told the people they had seen him wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in an oxen's cradle with only the roof of the humble Bethlehem stable to protect him from the night. The Jews, who had waited patiently for this event, rejoiced in the true miracle of Christmas, the birth of a child who would grow into a man and change the world.
