Fritz Wegner: Three Racing Cyclists Racing, record-breaking, and cycling have gone together from the start: races against the horse, against the human, and against the clock. The sport of bicycle racing has three main divisions: time trials, track races, and massed-start road races. A time trial is simply man against the clock, and may be ten miles long or last a full twenty-four hours. Racing on the track, once a popular crowd magnet, is less popular today. However, the sport still attracts hundreds of enthusiasts, and there are about two dozen tracks in Great Britain in frequent or occasional use. Today, the most popular form of bicycle racing is the massed-start road race over national highways. The most popular of these in Great Britain is the important Tour of Britain. In this race, contestants may average one hundred miles per day over a period of fourteen days. They race up grueling and hazardous mountain ranges, and down frightening descents through tight, busy villages. These races attract hundreds of thousands of spectators over the route, and road-racing champions are true national heroes who bring great honor to their countries. In fact, many fans often run out onto the road to touch their favorite cyclists, or offer them ice cream or a splash of water to cool them off. The racing bicycle is a machine unto itself, often costing thousands of dollars. The frames are made of a super-light alloy, and the brakes, handlebars, tires, and all other parts are manufactured specifically for racing.
