According to legend Bootes -- or the mighty man in a running posture -- holds in one hand a staff or spear and in the other hand, which is uplifted, he holds the leash of his hunting dogs. With the aid of his trusted dogs, Bootes is apparently pursuing the Great Bear around the north Celestial Pole. And for this reason, Bootes is often referred to as the Bear Driver.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the USSR 15kpc Halley's Comet stamp issued March 6, 1986.
