The Little Dog was considered to represent one of the hunting dogs of Orion, and was also identified with Actaeon's hound, which devoured its master after Diana had transformed him into a stag. It was also seen as Helen's dog, which accompanied her when she was abducted by Paris. The dog was later lost in the River Euripus, and in answer to her prayer was transferred by Jove to the skies.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Republique de Cote D'Ivoire Halley's Comet stamps issued January 30, 1986.
