This constellation has been associated with several mythical dogs, including the hound of Actaeon, but it has also been known as the Dog of Orion. Orion loved to hunt wild animals, such as Lepus, the Hare. Canis Major at Orion's heel in the sky, seems ready to pounce on the Hare.

This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the St. Vincent's Halley's Comet stamp issued February 13, 1986.
