Cancer was highly regard by the Chaldeans. They believed the soul existed in the astral world prior to entering the material world through the body of the mother. As Cancer was the mother sign, they called it "the Gate of Men," signifying their belief that motherhood affords the means of entering material existence, rather than initiating it. That belief was widely held throughout the ancient world.
