Fritz Wegner: Aries the Constellation Known as the Sheep to the Arabians and regarded highly as the Ram among the Egyptians, Aries also represents the fabled Ram which bore the Golden Fleece in Greek mythology. In the story, Phrixus and Helle -- the children of King Athamas of Thessaly -- were treated with great cruelty by their stepmother, Ino. Mercury, seeing their plight, was moved to pity and sent a ram, who fleece was of gold, to carry them beyond her power of persecution. The ram bore them swiftly through the air over land and sea. At last they reached the strait separating Europe from Asia. As they were crossing this body of water, Helle became dizzy on her lofty perch, fell, and was lost; and from that time, the strait was known as the Hellespont. Phrixus landly safely at Colchis on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, where Aetes was king of the country. In gratitude for his deliverance, he sacrificed the ram to the god.
