Although the Wedge-tailed Shearwater is a member of a large family of over fifty species, it and its cousins are rarely seen. This is because the Wedge-tailed Shearwater spends much of its life out at sea. Only during breeding season will the bird come to shore on islands in the tropical Pacific. The Wedge-tailed Shearwater will stay ashore only long enough to raise its young. It is an awkward bird on land, bumbling, stumbling and often falling down, but at sea, the bird is graceful, skimming along over the storm-tossed Pacific, plucking prey from the waters, following fishing fleets and occasionally resting on the waves.
