Nicknames almost always ring true and the tag given the Pintail is no exception: the greyhound of the air. Sleek, streamlined and slender, the Pintail in flight is arguably one of the most beautiful of all ducks. Even on the water, the Pintail drake is regal with his head held aloft and sharp tail swept high. In the winter, these elegant ducks can be seen probing the tidal estuaries and quiet bays of South Carolina, building energy for several months before the long flight northward in the spring. Pintails are explorers, pioneering out into new areas with some regularity. During times of drought, huge numbers shift northward to water and during fall migrations, some have been found thousands of miles from home.
