Pál Varga: Siberian (Gray-tailed) Tattler Known in Marshallese as Kidid, the Siberian or Gray-tailed Tattler breeds in Siberia and migrates to the tropical Pacific, where it winters throughout Micronesia, including the Marshall Islands. In breeding plumage, this bird is mottled gray with a white belly, and sports a distinctive white stripe above the eyes that contrasts with the dark crown. The Siberian Tattler is similar in appearance to the Wandering Tattler. In fact, the two are difficult to distinguish from one another in the field. Found near rocky shorelines, tidal flats and streams, the Siberian Tattler feeds on fish and small vertebrates. This bird runs quickly along the beach, probing for food with its long, pointed beak. Although primarily solitary, the Siberian Tattler is occasionally seen in small flocks.
