Barry Wilkinson: 1906 Wolseley-Siddeley The Wolseley-Siddeley was produced in 1896 ... and it soon became one of the most popular British cars in England and Europe, selling eight hundred in 1903 alone. The company's general manager -- the famous Herbert Austin -- was an energetic supporter of racing, and he religiously stood by his horizontal cylinder engine. Although this design was successful, the directors of Wolseley-Siddeley felt that the innovative vertical cylinder design was going to become popular in the future. The conflict finally led to Austin's resignation in 1905. Most of the engines of the 1906 model were built after a J.D. Siddeley vertical cylinder design ... although a few of the Austin design were used. The 1906 Wolseley-Siddeley had overhead inlet valves and overdrive gearboxes. It became a popular model throughout Europe. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® Europa Cover for the Portugal 51 Europa stamp issued May 2, 1984.
