Fritz Wegner: Hercules the Constellation Hercules, the Kneeler, is a large northern constellation between Corona Borealis and Lyra. It is named after Heracles-Hercules, the hero of classical Greco-Roman mythology. He was celebrated for his strength, courage, and divinie protection. Ras Algethi, the brightest star in the constellation is a beautiful, variable double star, one orange-red and the other blue-green. The star is among the largest known stars in the heavens. Its diameter measures 690,000,000 miles or about eight hundred times that of the sun's. The constellation memorializes Hercules, a son of Zeus by a mortal mother.
