Fritz Wegner: Equuleus the Constellation Equuleus was said to represent the famous white horse of Greek legend, Celeris, brother of Pegasus, which was given by Mercury to Castor. From time immemorial, the horse has been used to symbolize knowledge, understanding, intellect, and wisdom. It has been credited with the ability to see in the dark, and to receive sense impressions from the unseen world of spirits. The white horse typified pure intellect, reason, and unblemished character. Both Celeris and Pegasus were white. Celeris not only symbolizes worldly wisdom, purity in thinking, but was also concerned with physical experience. Celeris was a very useful steed, indeed, but not to be compared in speed and reliability with Pegasus, the winged horse. Pegasus represented inspiration, able to soar above the earth, capable of penetrating the inner planes of existence, gaining a wider perspective and a more accurate knowledge of essential fact. His knowledge is based on spiritual understanding. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Brasil Halley's Comet stamp issued April 11, 1986.
