Fritz Wegner: Capricornus the Constellation In Grecian mythology Capricorn is identified with Pan, the nature god of the woodlands and pastures, flocks and herdsmen. In their representations of him, he appears as a gay, hairy, horned, half-man and half-goat, with reed pipes in his hand. He was a roaming deity, given to mischievous pranks, sportive dancing, and playing the shepherd's flute. A legend relates that Pan and a group of his fellow deities were feasting near the banks of the Nile when the terrible monster Typhon appeared. To escape from him, Pan immediately jumped into the water and changed his form, the submerged part of his body turning to a fish and the upper part into a goat. The event was commemorated by Jupiter, who placed Pan among the constellations.
