In Greek mythology, Cetus represented the sea monster sent by Poseidon to devour Andromeda who was the daughter of King Cepheus of Ethiopia and his vain wife, Queen Cassiopeia. The queen had boasted of her beauty, declaring she was more beautiful than even the sea nymphs. This aroused the wrath of the sea nymphs' protector, the god Poseidon, who sent the monster to ravage the country. Advised by the oracles that only the sacrifice of their daughter would save the country, the king and queen had Andromeda bound to a rock on the coast for the monster to devour. Journeying through the area, Perseus the son of Zeus, saw a girl chained to a rock. He flew down, fell in love with her, and killed the monster. Perseus then returned Andromeda to her father and asked for her hand in marriage.
