Basil Smith: African Violet (Saintpaulia ionantha hybr.) The African Violet was discovered in 1892 by Baron von Saint Paul-Illaire in what was then the German colony of Tanganyika. Thus, the name Saintpaulia pays tribute to its discoverer while ionantha translates to violet flower. Today the African Violet is among the most popular house plants in the world. Though its original form is notoriously difficult to grow, many modern varieties are much more robust and flower freely.
