Mark Schuler: Francesc Cairat I Freres Despite the social changes other European nations have undergone over the centuries, the picturesque country of Andorra has miraculously endured virtually unchanged. Andorra seems to refuse to turn the pages of history, clinging to the past and the traditions of another age. Though in recent years new highways and increased outside communications have swept away some of the cobwebs of yesterday, the people still retain their age-old charm and their devotion to the Andorran traditions. One reason Andorra is able to protect her centuries-old lifestyle is that she has avoided the infiltration of foreign influences that war brings. Over the years, her leaders have staunchly upheld the peace, insisting that Andorra remain neutral in the conflicts of neighboring countries. Andorran leader Francesc Cairate I Freres was singleminded in his devotion to his country's neutrality. As Sindic General from 1937 up until 1960 he gave his country twenty-three years of peace, keeping Andorra out of battle even while her southern neighbor Spain fought a bitter Civil War. And, when the entire world burst into the flames of World War II, he guarded the neutrality of his country until the very end. With his actions as Sindic General, he demonstrated a love for his countrymen's way of life and a desire to preserve it for future generations. The efforts he spent to protect the peace earned him a place in the hearts of all Andorrans.
