Mark Schuler: Gustav Adolf Hasler At the time of his death in January 1900, Gustav Adolf Hasler was mourned by many, for he had been a man of rare diligence and great simplicity. Although born the son of a reputable Swiss lawyer, Hasler did not pursue law as a career. He was apprenticed to a well-known manufacturer of drafting machines and equipment. In his role as a precision mechanic, Gustav Hasler had many opportunities for travel. Beginning in 1851, his journeys took him from Vienna to Berlin to Hamburg and later home to Aarau. It was during his business trips that Hasler was acquainted with the newly-developed Morse telegraph. His interest in this innovative communication system led him to seek a position as the assistant to the director of the Federal Telegraph Workshop in Bern. In 1860, Hasler was promoted to director otf the Telegraph Workshop and served in that capacity for two years. It was at that time that the business was transferred to private ownership. Reluctant to give up the work he loved, Hasler bought the Telegraph Company along with a partner. Hasler assumed sole proprietorship a few years later. With untiring enthusiasm, Hasler pursued his business while also making significant contributions in the field of meteorological inventions. It was for his experiments and achievements in this field that the University of Bern conferred an honorary doctor's degree on him in 1875. He lived to see the invention of the telephone, and in 1895, this marvel caused his company to expand to meet the needs of the public.
