Born on January 10, 1480, Margaret of Austria was the only daughter of Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgandy. At the age of two, Margaret was betrothed to the future Charles VIII of France. Nine years later, Charles broke the engagement. Margaret was then forced to leave the Court of France and return to her father in the Netherlands. Margaret later married Juan of Castille. Only six months after the marriage was performed, Juan died. Margaret settled in the Netherlands until her marriage to Philibert, Duke of Savoy. For three years, Margaret lived in affluence. But Margaret was again prematurely widowed when Philibert died in September 1504, and again returned to her father's arms. Trusting Margaret's counsel, Maximilian made her guardian of the country during the years before Charles V came of age. During the early years of her administration, Margaret supported the Hapsburg Dynasty. Margaret was removd from office when the States General declared Charles V of age in 1515. Four years later, Margaret was officially re-established while Charles pursued his duties as King of Spain. She again devoted herself to the interests of the Hapsburg Dynasty, which resulted in the election of Charles V as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and which led to the resumption of the war with France. Margaret met with the Queen of France in 1529 and negotiated the "Pax des Dames."
