The house lights dim and the last whispers from the audience die out as the curtains open on a brilliantly lit stage. A figure emerges from the wings and the audience rises to its feet, loud applause ringing thoughout the theater. Maria Callas, one of the greatest operatic sopranos in history, is ready to captivate her audience with another vibrant performance. Born in 1923, in New York City of Greek parents, dreams of world fame began early and, when she was thirteen, she moved to Greece to study music at the Royal Conservatory in Athens. In 1947 she made her professional debut at Verona in La Gioconda. Her performance enthralled the audience and won immediate recognition for her. Two years later she married Italian industrialist Giovanni Battide Meneghini and the following year, 1950, made her first appearance at La Scalla in Milan. Combining marriage and career, she began singing more demanding parts and became known for her authority in all the most exacting soprano roles. With dramatic versatility she sang Bellini, Puccini and Wagner and excelled in the intricate bel canto style of pre-Verdian Italian opera. Off-stage her life was often as colorful as it was on-stage and she performed around the world, charming royalty and becoming the confidant of some of the world's most influential people.
