Living a long and tortured life, Jefferson Davis nonetheless maintained a courage that few can match. Davis grew up in Mississippi. While the family was not well-to-do, an older brother made his fortune. It was his interest in his younger brother that took Jefferson through courses at several universities and saw him graduated from the United States Military Academy. Throughout his life, Jefferson Davis had visions of military fame. Yet his only real military victory came in 1845 when he took command of the "Mississippi Rifles" in the Mexican War. The stand made by his troops in the Battle of Buena Vista saved General Taylor from defeat. When the "Rifles" disbanded in 1847, Davis resigned from the Army and moved to Washington as Senator from Mississippi. In 1853, he served as Secretary of War for President Franklin Pierce. Davis went back to the Senate in 1857, becoming a major spokesman for the South. But when Mississippi seceded, Davis severed all ties with the Union, accepting command of his state's military forces. Although he would have much preferred an appointment as commander of the Southern armies, Davis accepted his election as President of the Confederacy with grace. After the war, he was imprisoned for two years and then he lived the rest of his days in relative poverty.
