Mark Schuler: Sir Walter Raleigh Soldier, seaman, courtier, writer, and explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh survives in history as an interesteing and enigmatic personality. His outspoken criticism of English policy in Ireland brought him to the attention of Queen Elizabeth I. By 1582, he had become a reigning favorite with the Queen, and in that position began to acquire lucrative monopolies, properties, and influential positions. As a favorite, Raleigh was not popular among his peers. He was notorious for extravagant spending, arrogant pride, and unorthodox thought. Queen Elizabeth continued to favor Raleigh by securing for him numerous business enterprises and in 1585 he was knighted. A short time later, he began his courtship with the daughter of Sir Nicholas Throckmorton -- a courtship which had to be kept secret from the jealous Queen. In 1592, the birth of a son betrayed him and he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. After buying his release, Raleigh led an expedition to what is now Guyana, South America, in search of Eldorado. Although he did locate some gold mines, no one wanted to support his project for colonizing the area. He returned to England and in 1600 was appointed governor of Jersey. Three years later, during the reign of James I, Raleigh was accused of treason and again imprisoned. In 1616, he was released and set out on another expedition to South America with explicit orders not to invade Spanish territory. Raleigh's men disobeyed the order and upon his return to England, Raleigh was executed at Whitehall.
