Mark Schuler: General Lewis Wallace Lewis (Lew) Wallace led a remarkable life that saw him safely through the bloodshed of several major wars, and finally into an outstanding literary career that would leave his name dear to the hearts of millions of Americans. Wallace was adventurous as a young lad growing up in Indiana. He was often truant from school, preferring the fields and streams of the country to the confines of a classroom. However, upon moving to Indianapolis, young Wallace became fascinated with the library. From his numerous trips to the library, he became well read in many of the best works. In addition, he gained a fine understanding of United States history, politics and the government structure. However, his studies were interrupted when the Mexican War broke out. Wallace enlisted and gained important military experience form the war. This experience distinguished Wallace as an excellent military strategist and he later served as a brilliant General in the Civil War. Yet, of all his many accomplishments, Lewis Wallace is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to literature. His book, Ben Hur made him one of the most noted authors in America. Over 300,000 copies were sold within ten years of its publication, and it continues to be a favorite adventure story of both young and old alike.
