As the snow melts and the green shoots of spring's first wildflowers appear, the Violet can be seen growing in woodland, heath, and fen. This delightful flower is a part of the family Viola. A favorite family, Viola contains many perennial herbs such as the Pansies and the Violets. It also includes a number of small shrubs. The Violet is, perhaps, the most popular and most important genus in this family. It is a flower much loved by man and also one steeped in legend. Historically, Violets were very important to Emperor Napoleon. His wife, Josephine wore the tiny blossoms on their wedding day, and so each year on their anniversary, Napoleon again gave her Violets. In defeat, when he was taken away for a life in exile. Napoleon told his followers he would return with the Violets. This promise was fulfilled when on his return Napoleon was greeted by loyal friends wearing Violets or violet-colored clothing. It is also the symbol of Athens, and three states -- New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin -- claim the Violet as their floral emblem. In Great Britain, the Violet is a sure sign of spring's arrival. With tender fragrance and colorful blossoms, the Violet heralds spring and then continues to flourish well into the summer. It is a favorite plant in gardens, but it easily reverts to the wild if left to fend for itself. The Violet featured on this art is the Dog Violet. With its rich, purple blossoms and bright yellow spurs, it is one of spring's loveliest blossoms.
