Kristin Rosenberg: Snowdrops With the first thaw of spring, the Snowdrop forces its tiny head above the ground. Blooming very early in the year and bearing pure white blossoms, this flower seems almost to be made of snow. In fact, it gained its name through this resemblance. Interestingly, the tiny Snowdrop is often found in Europe wherever an old monastery or abbey stands. Many people believe that the flowers grow there because they were introduced by Italian monks who probably planted them near their own residences. In any case, the Snowdrop has come to be a symbol of consolation and promise: two virtues synonymous with the Christian faith. Over the years, these tiny, nodding flowers have acquired many names including Bulbous Violets, Mary's Tapers, and Candlemas Bells. However, in England the Snowdrop has traditionally been called the Fair Maid of February. Since it seems impervious to both frost and cold, the Snowdrop is easily grown in cool climates. It can be planted in early autumn, in a sheltered spot, and then left unattended. However, it is important that the bulbs be planted as soon as possible, for they will deteriorate rapidly if left above ground. There are many varieties of this hardy plant; some of the favorite ones are Fiore Pleno, a variety with double flowers; Straffan, a late flowering plant; and Flavescens, a variety with yellow markings. The Snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, featured on this artwork, is one of Great Britain's woodland joys and also one of the heralds of springtime.
