Kristin Rosenberg: Bluebell The bell-shaped, blue-violet flowers of the Bluebell are always a welcome sight growing beside country lanes and in woodlands. Just as their lovely blossoms tell of spring's arrival, so their delightful fragrance permeates the air signaling the change of season. This lovely woodland flower is a member of the Lily family, one of the largest families of flowering plants. The family contains a great variety of plants including colorful Tulips, sweet-smelling Hyacinths, and, of course, stately Lilies. Within the Lily family, the Bluebell is a part of the genus Endymion. Many people believe that the Endymion genus was named for a character in Greek mythology. According to the myth, Endymion, a very handsome young man, was loved by Selene, the goddess of the moon. Each night as he slept, Selene would come to visit him. In order that she might enjoy his companionship undisturbed, Selene imposed an eternal sleep on Endymion which also preserved his intense beauty. It seems possible -- with the nodding heads, that give the Bluebell almost a sleepy appearance, and with the flower's distinctive beauty that the Bluebell's genus could have been named for the sleeping Endymion of mythology. This tiny plant of interesting nomenclature is today recognized as a perfect beauty of the open woodlands. Hikers agree that it is indeed a delight to come upon these miniature favorites while walking through the woods. As a native of the English countryside, Endymion nonscriptus is known as the Bluebell of England.
