Kristin Rosenberg: Star of Bethlehem The Star of Bethlehem Ornithogalum umbellatum or Liliaceae Lily has six slender petals and is common in the springtime. The flowers grow in a cluster on top of yellowish-green stalks that branch out at alternately from the main stalk. The flowers, which close up in shady weather, have bright green tepals on the outsides. The flowers are produced in April and May in meadows and moist deciduous forests. All parts of the plant are considered poisonous, especially the bulbs producing toxic cardiac glycosides similar to foxglove. Artwork Copyright © 1979 Unicover Corporation.
