Kristin Rosenberg: Mistletoe Christmas is, traditionally, a time for family gatherings. Houses are decked with evergreen and berried branches, and with artificial decorations. The Christmas tree is adorned with the baubles, tinsel, novelties and fairy lights that have evolved from gilded fruits and nuts, sweetmeats, and candles. The mistletoe bough is hung in the hall, and the holly wreath on the door. Intricate paper chains festoon the ceilings, plump paper bells silently echo the message of the church bells which peal out so joyfully at Christmas time, and bunches of balloons brighten dark corners. It is the season of delight; of carols by candlelight; roaring log fires; feasts of turkey and Christmas pudding; crackers full of novelties, jokes and riddles, and the ever popular fancy paper hats. It is time for celebration; for the bringing of gifts; for the playing of games; for dressing up, pantomimes and parties. Christmas is really a festival of hope. It is the time when Christians celebrate the birth of a Savior and a new faith. It is also a Norse candle glow, a little of ancient Druid superstition and some Saturnalian custom. Most people, whatever their beliefs, are moved by the beauty of the Nativity story and subscribe to the message of the angels: "Peace on earth, good will toward men." Decking our homes and churches, our schools and work places, the town centers and the streets, not only creates a festive atmosphere, but also helps to spread that message, proclaiming "Seasons Greetings, Joy, and Happiness" to all.
