Kristin Rosenberg: Flowers of St. Lucia
The flowers of St. Lucia form this floral bouquet, while the decorative ribbons represent St. Lucia's national colors. Countless forms of the distinctive flower, Anthurium, ranging in color from white to dark red, grow in the West Indies. The delightful evergreen shrub, Brunfelsia, sports large flowers in several shades, including the violet blue variety shown in this painting. The fruit of the Pomegranate finds its way to marketplaces throughout the West Indies. The spectacular Hibiscus is worn by both men and women. One of the nearly 10,000 varieties of fern, the Ladder fern thrives in jungles and households alike. The tear-shaped leaves of the Maidenhair fern form a delicate pattern resembling the lace on a bridal gown. The Maidenhair Fern is often used in flower arrangements. Found throughout the West Indies, limes flavor many of the dishes served on the islands.
