One of nature's most spectacular flowers, the elegant rose creates an attractive display in flower gardens throughout the world. The most popular bush roses are hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras and miniatures. Floribundas were first developed in 1924 by American rosarian Dr. J.H. Nicolas, when he crossed a hybrid tea with a polyantha variety to produce the floribunda Rochester. Other floribundas followed, including the magnificent Masquerade Rose. This lovely flower is characterized by its unique series of color changes. The Masquerade is yellow when young and, as it ages, the flowers become salmon pink, turning to dark red. A fragrant rose, these flowers typically display continuous blooms from late spring through fall.

This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 33¢ Masquerade Rose stamp issued February 23, 2000.
