Kristin Rosenberg: Charles de Mills Rose Old Garden Roses are found in several major groups, including Gallica, Damask, Alba, Centifolia and Moss. The oldest roses belong to the Gallica group and include the French rose that was cultivated during the 16th century, making it the earliest European species still in existence. Gallicas are hardy and vigorous, forming dense bushes of three to four feet in height. Their fragrant flowers bloom only once in early summer. The Charles De Mills rose is from the Gallica group and displays delicate pale yellow blossoms among thick, green foliage. Another variety of Gallica rose includes the Apothecary's Rose, a brilliant pink rose grown during the Middle Ages in almost every monastery garden and used in various herbal remedies.
