Kristin Rosenberg: Tuscany Superb Rose Old Garden Roses comprise many complex hybrids, including Bourbon, Damask, Gallica, Alba, Centifolia and Portland. Unlike hybrid teas and floribundas, Old Garden Roses often develop into large shrubs with stout, woody canes. These hardy roses require less protection than many modern varieties. Some Old Garden Roses produce attractive fruits called rose hips that remain on the bush throughout the winter. These fruits are high in vitamin C and are frequently used to make jelly or syrup. The Tuscany Superb Rose is a variety of Gallica Old Garden Rose. Its velvety crimson petals present a striking display against its dark green foliage. Other varieties of Gallica roses include Belle Isis, Cardinal de Richelieu, Complicata, Rosa Mundi and Versicolor.
