Chuck Ripper: Short-tailed Tibetan Macaque Also known as the Pére David's Stump-tailed Macaque, the Short-tailed Tibetan Macaque belongs to the Ceropithecidae family of Old World monkeys. An inhabitant of the eastern Tibet administrative division and Sichuan province of China, this gregarious, diurnal monkey has a stocky build with agile, robust limbs. Identified by a distinct, low brow ridge, the Short-tailed Tibetan Macaque has long, thick gray-brown fur, particularly around its ears and on top of its head. This warm coat provides protection from Tibet's cold winters. The largest of macaque species, the Short-tailed Tibetan Macaque is terrestrial and omnivorous in its feeding habits, and is equally at home in trees or on the ground. A denizen of Asia's broad leaved evergreen forests, this macaque is often seen in high altitudes and is similar in behavior to the bonnet macaque of nearby India. The Macaque male lives within a more specialized dominance hierarchy than the female and is responsible for leading the group and maintaining discipline. Found in such diverse habitats as forests, plains and rocky terrain, the macaque uses its large cheek pouches to store extra food. Although this primate is considered highly intelligent, once it reaches maturity it can be bad-tempered. There are about 12 species of macaque, but the Short-tailed Tibetan Macaque is one of the least common and its endangered status in the wild is unknown.
