Keith Reynolds: Whaling Ship "There she blows! -- there she breaches!" was the excited call from the masthead lookout of a whaling ship off the New England sea coast. This familiar call was the magic formula that transformed the sordid, cruel business of whaling into an inspiring game; a game that made the rawest recruit a loyal team-mate of the hardest officer. When a whale was spotted, small, sleek boats were launched from the sides of the huge, bulky whaling ship. These small whaleboats were beautifully designed crafts. Double-ended, twenty-eight to thirty feet long, six feet broad, and only twenty-six inches deep amidship ... propelled by a sturdy spritsail or by five stout fourteen foot oars. As the boats left the ship and raced toward the unsuspecting whale, the office of each boat would exhort and excite his crew for the hunt and the kill. Then, as the boat reached its prey, the officer would shout to the harpooner, "Stand up, and let him have it, lad!" As the harpoon sunk deep into the whale's back, the beast would frantically race away, towing the whaleboat behind. The fast-moving, hair-raising ride that ensued ... up over the crests of waves and then down through the low troughs ... was warmly known to the whaling men of New England as a "Nantucket sleighride."
