Mark Schuler: Alexander Stephens
Among the many people that served the state of Georgia during the Civil War, one of the most honored was Alexander H. Stephens. Although born almost an invalid, and orphaned when he was just fourteen, Stephens was able to educate himself and graduated from the University of Georgia at the top of his class. After serving in the state legislature, he was elected to the United States Congress where he patiently supported the interests of the South. Although he resigned from the House in 1859 when he felt that Congress no longer represented the best interests of the South, Stephens urged moderation in both the North and South. When compromise failed, Stephens voted for secession with the Georgia Legislature. The Confederacy immediately called upon this man of principle to serve the South as Vice President. Although he served with distinction, Stephens was not blind to the abuses of several rights by the Confederacy, including the illegal conscription of soldiers and the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus which protects citizens against illegal imprisonment. Once the Civil War was over, Stephens urged the South to accept peacefully the reconstruction policies of the North. The voters of Georgia sent him again and again to Congress where he served as a master parliamentarian.
