Donald Moss: New York University Library Architect Stanford White was imbued with an innate appreciation of beauty that gave his buildings immortality in the eyes of his countrymen. One of the finest examples of his genius can be seen in the New York University Library. Gould Memorial Library, as the structure was originally known, is often spoken of by art critics as one of America's most noteworthy buildings. In its structure, White portrayed the highest expression of his art in classical terms. In fact, the style of the Library is reminiscent of the Greek Pantheon. But, it also vividly reflected the growing wealth and cultural awareness of turn-of-the-century America. Perhaps one of the most beautiful aspects of the Library is its location. Situated on the brow of a hill directly overlooking the Harlem River, the Library offers a excellent view of the distant Hudson River and the Palisades. The Library's main doors have become a memorial to the structure's visionary architect. Covered with cast bronze figures, the doors typify an old world custom of including the work of many different artists in one work of art. Inside, large columns -- specimens of green Irish marble -- support a massive dome. It has been said that whatever architect Stanford White's hand touched, it adorned. The New York University Library is no exception. Decorative squares, rosettes in bronze and gold, and an awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling over the central staircase mark this building as a true achievement of American architecture.
